Recent Adventures: Robert’s Cove

New Hampshire’s Lake Winnipesaukee has more than its share of beautiful coves and inlets. Robert’s Cove is one example. From a photography standpoint, if you are shooting a sunset, you are usually limited to about a week in the spring, and a week in the fall when you can catch the sun sink below the horizon in alignment with the cove itself. This image from early May is a great example of being a day or two too late. With all the rain we have had lately, I had no choice this spring. I will be back in the fall when this alignment returns.

The sun had just dipped below the horizon when the picture above and at left were taken. The picture above is a shot taken with a 10-stop neutral density filter on the lens, resulting in a 30-second exposure. This makes the water’s surface mirror-like and increases the definition in the reflections.

The image at left was taken well past sunset, at the start of what is commonly referred to as “blue hour.”

Another fact of nature, especially near water, is that New Hampshire has it’s fair share of mosquitoes each spring. As blue hour settled in, these little vampires started showing up, which drove me back to the car to head home.
